LAKE HAVASU – Aug. 5 report from John Galbraith of BassTackleMaster.com in Lake Havasu City:
Lake level is 448.79 feet.

The striper bite is fair with some a.m. boils of stripers chasing schools of shad.

Use shad style baits such as a Pointer 100s and 128s, White Rat-L-Traps, poppers or Spook-style top-waters no longer than 6 inches long.

Troll or cast them around the south side of the island south to Havasu Palms.

Bottom-fishing cut bait such as anchovies or mackerel is producing some quality channel catfish of more than 5 pounds.

Smallmouth bass bite is good on green pumpkin-colored Hula grubs rigged on a 3/8 or ½-ounce football jig fished around rocky banks in 6-18 feet of water.

Largemouth bass bite best on tubes and Senkos rigged as light as possible and fished around tulle/cattail shade pockets during sunny times of the day.  It’s most importantly that the bait falls slowly to give the bass time to take the bait.

Top-water frogs like the bronzeye and bully were working well just before sunset.

Be sure to rig them with braided line with 20-50-pound strength with a medium heavy to heavy-action 7-foot rod.
A strong hookset is required to catch bass using this technique. Cast the frogs around the base of cattails and tulles.
